Do you have a small kitchen? If so, you are not alone as a lot of modern houses have cut down on kitchen space. These days, kitchens are more functional than they used to be, and as cooking has become more labor intensive than ever due to the spread of modern technology, a lot of space is no longer necessary. Gone are the sculleries and pantries of yesteryear.

With this in mind, when decorating or designing your kitchen it is very important to maximize the space that you have available. After all, you need your kitchen to be a user-friendly place for preparing your food as well as for storing all of your kitchen appliances. Countertops need to be clutter free so that you will have more room to maneuver.

For this reason, one very practical kitchen decorating idea is the creation of a kitchen work station. If you think about it, in the office you probably have your own compact work station, comprised of your computer, office equipment and files, neatly and elegantly put together in one desk. Similarly, you can maximize the space that you have available in your kitchen, especially as it is small, and put as many things together into one unit.

You can find this idea in various formats. For example, there is the mobile work station, which is comprised of a surface for chopping and working and a lower shelf for the utensils you need. The great thing about this is that you don’t need to confine it to the kitchen. For example, if you have some friends round, you may want to wheel it into the dining room for your own home salad bar. This will make passage between the kitchen and dining room a lot easier and also ease the problems of space in your kitchen as you prepare food and serve your guests. The pressure is taken off from having to make space on your countertops and finding room to work in a small kitchen.

Kitchen carts operate on the same principle. These ease the problems of serving and going from the kitchen to dining room and vice versa. Kitchen carts come in elegant designs, and some varieties are made from wood, such as teak or bamboo, making them look like a very prized piece of furniture.

Another kind of work station is the kitchen island. Unlike regular counters, which are attached to the wall, this is in the center of the room. A kitchen island can look good even in the smallest room, where it will give the illusion of extra space because it is freestanding. Unlike the other work stations mentioned above, this is not mobile.

If you are very short of space, your compact kitchen work station can run along one wall and be comprised of a countertop, a cupboard, maybe with a microwave or oven set into the wall cabinet, and a small burner set into the counter. Drawers and cupboards set close together provide kitchen storage solutions.

The main thing is to be compact, fitting in as much as possible, and you will then be able to get the most out of this useful idea.
